Hippocampus Magazine is excited to announce this year’s theme issue. Between now and Sept. 15, 2019, we’re accepting pieces up to 4,000 that connect to the theme: LOST.

Do you have a story about a time you were literally lost — maybe on a winding back road, in a sprawling city, or inside a cavernous building? Or maybe you were metaphorically lost, unsure of your life’s direction, until that one moment or one person changed everything. Your LOST story could: recap the time you were lost in love (now Air Supply is stuck in our heads); reflect on what happened with a physical object of sentimental (or monetary) value went missing; detail a time you didn’t come out on top in a game, competition, or race.

We can’t wait to read your submissions.

Theme Issue Submission Details:

  • Deadline – Sept. 15
  • Word Limit – up to 4,000 (flash up to 800)
  • Requirements – must clearly fit the LOST theme (we love the variety of ways writers interpret themes, but the connection must be clear)
  • Reading Period – we begin reading theme submissions in earnest after the Sept. 15 deadline; you will hear back by early November
  • Issue published in December 2019
  • Refer to full guidelines, here.

Tip:

As this theme can be interpreted in many ways, we’re likely to choose a selection that reflects a variety of approaches to the subject. We mention this because we do anticipate that the theme “lost” will prompt many pieces about the loss of a loved one or pet, which are already common themes for personal essays. Please know that submissions on this topic should be especially strong to fit the theme issue.
