This year at Hippocampus Magazine we published six issues and 45+ pieces of creative nonfiction from emerging and established writers. As always, we’re so incredibly proud the compelling voices we get to share with our readers in each edition. And every year, we’re faced with an incredible challenge when nomination season rolls around.
We are delighted to announce our six Pushcart Prize nominations for 2025:
| Author Name(s) | Essay Name | 2025 Issue |
| Paula Burke | “Subtraction” | January-February |
| Lauren L. Cisneros | “How You Become a Girl” | May-June |
| Margaret Luongo | “Double Dutch” | September-October |
| Carrie Mac | “Three Envelopes” | March-April |
| Chutian Shi | “Clear Sky” | March-April |
| Lori White | “Last Trip” | March-April |
We wish these six writers the best of luck as the Pushcart team reviews all nominations.
Additional Pushcart News: One of Our Own!
Editors are usually the ones that do the nominating, but we wear many hats! So we also need to share some exciting news for one of our team members:
Short Reads nominated our flash editor Wendy Fontaine’s essay “Crushed” for a Pushcart Prize. The essay appeared in Short Reads on May 28, 2025, and you can read it here.
