Hippocampus Magazine is growing and, with that, comes a need to expand our volunteer team. We’re looking to add a few members to our editorial and marketing staff, including the creation of a new promotion team.

Our mission is to educate, entertain, and engage readers and writers of creative nonfiction. If you’re looking to get involved with the behind-the-scenes at literary magazine, please check out the openings below and reach out to us if you’re interested in applying or learning more.

Social Media Writer (2)

One prong of Hippocampus Magazine’s three-fold mission is to engage with readers and writers of creative nonfiction—that is, to create and participate in conversations with our audience. We’re seeking to fill two new volunteer social media positions.

Our two new social media writers will each focus in a different area, either to create content that encourages visits to our current issue, therefore promoting our contributors and their work, or to create evergreen content related to the literary community, writing life, or our magazine in general.

Responsibilities

  • Position 1 (CREATIVE) – create a Twitter and Facebook post for each work of creative nonfiction and each article per issue (about 10-12 pieces per month).
  • Position 2 (COMMUNITY) – craft 10-12 social media posts (evergreen content) of interest to readers and writers of creative nonfiction.
  • Time commitment: 3-4 hours per month

Desired Skills and Experiences:

  • Social media writers do not have to have social media management experience, but should be well-versed in writing succinct, engaging copy meant for a general audience.
  • Social media writers must be familiar with Google Drive and comfortable with project management software to communicate and track milestones. (We use Asana and Slack.)
  • This position only involves creating content and does not entail managing social media accounts (posting, responding, etc.).

Term/Details:

  • Six months, initially – renewable from there on a year-long term basis.
  • Social media writers will be listed on masthead under our promotion team heading.
  • This is a volunteer position.

To Apply:

Send an email to hippocampusmagazine (at) gmail (dot) com with the following:

  • Which social media writer position interests you that most.
  • Brief letter of interest explaining your desire to volunteer with Hippocampus in this capacity; letter can entail any relevant experience.
  • Sample Facebook post promoting any past Hippocampus story.
  • Sample Tweet promoting any past Hippocampus story.
  • Sample social media post of your choice highlighting something relevant to creative nonfiction writers (this could be an article, a resource, a call for submissions, etc.)

Deadline: April 21, 2017

Articles Editor for The Writing Life

This position joins our craft editor as our second section editor. In this role, you will help shape future issues of the magazine and grow our articles section. The Writing Life, as its name implies, focuses on what it’s like to be a writer today. Each monthly column features one writer’s observations about their place in the world as a creative—and in their other roles: parent, partner, professional, etc.

Responsibilities/Desired Skills and Experiences:

  • The editor will solicit work from and manage volunteer guest writers. They will prepare one piece a month for publication in the magazine.
  • Writing Life editor must be familiar working with Google Drive and WordPress, and comfortable with using project management software to communicate and track milestones. (We use Asana and Slack.)
  • Time commitment: 3-4 hours per month (average)

Term/Details:

  • Six months, initially – renewable from there on a year-long term basis.
  • Section editor will be listed on masthead under our editors team heading.
  • This is a volunteer position.

  • Brief letter of interest explaining your desire to volunteer with Hippocampus in this capacity; letter can entail any relevant experience.
  • Your vision for a solid Writing Life section (for example, you could discuss range of topics and writers, etc.)

We’re looking to expand our copy editing team, the folks who help us give a final polish to accepted stories.

Responsibilities/Desired Skills and Experiences:

  • Copy editors will, in our collaborative workspace, provide minor edits and/or make editorial suggestions on 2-3 stories per month; from there, publisher or senior copy editor will prepare final draft
  • Copy editors must be familiar working/collaborating in Google Drive and comfortable with using project management software to communicate and track milestones. (We use Asana and Slack.)
  • This is a volunteer position
  • Time commitment: 3-4 hours per month
